Have you been affected by Ciguatera Poisoning?: Yes, I have had ciguatera poisoning
How did you hear about us?: Search Engine

Tell us your story: My story is very long and horrific. I’m a Floridian and grew up eating fish. I never knew anything about ciguatera until it changed my life forever. I was in ICU for four days and nobody knew what was wrong with me. I lost my speech and parts of my body would go numb off/on. I had many symptoms but the worst was I couldn’t remember my daughter or my own name. It was the most awful thing. They ran every test imaginable on me. They even did a spinal tap. After getting somewhat back to normal. I went to 5 different neurologists and not 1 could help me. I even went down to the University of Miami and they laughed at me. Your symptoms couldn’t possibly be from food poisoning. I spoke with a few people who knew about ciguatera. Most people and medical specialist have no clue. I am still struggling with the effects and it’s been almost 6 years. I am so glad that people are finally becoming more aware. I hope nobody ever goes through what I did. Thank you for creating this site.
Michelle:

So sorry to hear your story, I did know about it and after getting sick and it lasting for months I thought the symptoms would never go away. Luckily my symptoms did subside after months of insane pain and the emotional roller coaster of wondering if I was ever going to get better. I still have reversal of hot in cold in my hands when I touch something ice cold, it scares me knowing there are any symptoms left after a few years. I find it crazy that UM laughed at you, they were somewhat helpful for me when I spoke to then in 2012.
Please let me know what symptoms are you still experiencing?
I’m also curious what kind of fish made you sick and how much did you have?
